MORE and more women are seeking out business opportunities that allow them to fulfil their career ambitions, balance work and family life, and offer good earning potential, according to the British Franchise Association.
As a tried and tested business model, franchising is an option that could become increasingly attractive to them as new and more diverse franchise opportunities continue to emerge.
The latest NatWest and British Franchise Association (bfa) annual franchise survey has revealed that 23 percent of new franchisees are women.
Kim Richardson, 27, a biochemistry and genetics graduate from Hertfordshire, became one of the latest to join the female franchisee ranks when she took on a Revive! automotive repair franchise last June.
“I liked the idea of doing an outdoors job that is both mentally and physically stimulating, without being too strenuous,” she said.
While admitting that it may not be the most obvious choice for a woman looking to run her own business, she insists that she has additional strengths to offer, including a great eye for detail, which is important when carrying out SMART repairs.
Ms Richardson, who plans to expand the business with her boyfriend Adam over the next year, said: “When you are going into business with your own franchise it’s important to have the support of your partner and your family; you need someone who understands what you are talking about.”
