SOLID FOUNDATIONS

Monday 10th May 2010

TIRED of working as an employee, building surveyor Alex Fuller’s dream was to work for himself and after giving the idea careful thought he decided to do something about it.

His fiancee, Gemma Oswell, who worked as a business assistant for a civil engineering firm, was in a similar position and shared his ambitions, so together they started looking for a fresh start, and their search began at a franchise exhibition.

“We heard hadn’t considered such a business option before, but decided to go along and keep an open mind,” said Mr Fuller, who lives in Worcester.

It was at the National Franchise Exhibition in Birmingham that the couple first discovered Architectural Services, an architectural franchise company that specialises in residential construction, such as extensions and loft conversions.

Mr Fuller said: “We realised that the franchise model gives you the freedom to run your own business with the ongoing support of a larger team. The flexible operating times and back-end support has allowed us to continue to build the business locally, and still deliver to our clients.”

The couple have identified clear roles for themselves within the business. While he uses his skills to develop architectural plans and liaise with clients, Ms Oswell handles the marketing and administration.

If the prospect of running a business together appeals to other couples, they can explore some of the opportunities offered by the franchise sector at the forthcoming British Franchise Exhibition, taking place at Manchester Central on Friday and Saturday, June 11 and 12.

Home improvement and maintenance services, food and beverage outlets, lifestyle companies and business management consultancies are among the markets represented at the event, with companies that include Architectural Services, Texas Chicken, Card Group and Leisure Leagues featuring among the exhibitors.

A free seminar programme covers the key issues that franchisee couples need to know about, including finance, franchisee agreements, and the importance of family support, while representatives from the banks, law firms and the franchising industry will be on hand to offer advice on all aspects of running a franchise.
